This crossbow is typical of many medieval 15thC munition quality war crossbows so it is plain and rather blocky. Bow irons came in around 1400 though lashing was also still used, and this crossbow is made with irons.
The ironwork is traditionally blackened using heat and linseed oil to provide a solid layer of rust resistance (also looks cool as heck!).
This 350lbs medieval crossbow cannot be spanned by hand so comes with a goats foot lever (not blackened) and 3 bolts.
