17thC Schnepper crossbow

This hunting crossbow is typical of German sporting crossbows of the 17th Century.  It has a sculptural stock that is starting to have the forms of later gun stocks, but what is very notable is the complex trigger system incorporating a trigger cocking lever and the ‘schnepper’ catch.

The schnepper crossbow is spanned using a gaffe or wippe lever and can be supplied from 200lbs to 350lbs.
