In many of Breughels’ paintings you see fairly low status men carrying short messers often with a side ring and a knuckle bow. This form of short sword was popular throughout the 16thC.
They were often fairly crude and are often worn slung from a baldric. Clearly they are working items and not just for show and the owners give the impression they were used as tools as much as weapons. (shown here with and without a custom eating se of knife and pricker).
